I think this article has protection backwards. As I understand protection, it means that some area outside of the primary framing aperture will be protected from the appearance of boom mics, equipment, and such, so that a different aspect ratio extraction may be created later that includes more of the frame on the top and bottom or left and right. It's protecting the edges of the image from things that shouldn't be seen, as apposed to protecting things that should be seen from the edge of the frame. But I don't have a clear source for this.
