Where did the superscript designations originate?
[edit]σ1 and σ2 obviously didn't come from Bayer or Lacaille. I can't find any reference to them before about 1975, and even that might be a transcription mistake. They showed up in the 1980's and soon became quite widely used (at least for σ2) but I can't find any paper that says "hey, let's use 1 and 2 instead of A and B ...".
