History[edit]

The constituency was created in 1983, largely replacing the former seat of Farnham. It has been consistently won by the Conservative Party, though the majority dropped to a mere 861 votes in 2001, leaving it the Liberal Democrats' third target constituency (by swing required). Since then, however, the Conservative majority has substantially increased, exceeding 28,000 in 2015.

This is rather misleading. As noted as a footnote to the 2015 results Haveron was suspended by the Lib Dems after nominations so still appeared on the ballot but not representing the Lib Dems. That meant there was no Lib Dem candidate. This was well publicised before the election. As a result most people who would have voted the Lib Dems did not for administrative reasons. The Conservative majority in the 2017 election is therefore likely to return to a similar size as in the past elections.

1983 Election[edit]

I was a party member in SW Surrey that selected Gavin Scott https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Scott (a 34-year-old Channel Four newscaster, whose speciality was international trade) to contest the 1984 by-election. The previous candidate was author George Scott, whom Maurice Macmillan defeated comfortably.
