Full stop[edit]

Why does the page have a full stop after St? This is non-standard, and not used by the college itself: [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.212.86.31 (talk) 20:11, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't any longer. Wayne Jayes (talk) 20:43, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Creating New Sections?[edit]

Hello! I am starting to work on editing this article for a technical editing class. My main goals are to make the information more organized by using more headings and subheadings, modeled after other university Wikipedia articles. I will be posting any major suggested changes to my talk page before implementing them here, so please feel free to talk with me about any editing suggestions, questions, or concerns that you have. Srob21 (talk) 16:00, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

After looking at the article, I've started thinking about ways to reorganize the information so the user could get the most use out of it. I looked at other university and high school articles that have reached "featured article" status (like Texas A&M University and Amador Valley High School), and found that many of the sections included there could be useful here. Here are my suggestions:

I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on these changes. Srob21 (talk) 19:15, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Delete Unnecessary Information?[edit]

I've found information I believes contributes to the tag that says there is an excessive amount of intricate detail in this article. The areas I wish to cut down are:

  • Early History, paragraph 2 ("These schools consist of modern day..." and "By 1903 45 state schools...")
  • Expansion and growth, paragraph 7 (Information about the school's centenary year and various celebrations)
  • Old Johannian Association - all of this information appears to be plagiarized from this website: http://www.oja.co.za/about-oja/, so I would cut down to bare minimum basics and summation of information. Also, the current phrasing is, I believe, in violation of "What Wikipedia is Not" rules, specifically Wikipedia is not promotion (WP:PROMOTION)

I have posted some of my proposed changes to my sandbox here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Srob21/stjohns_sandbox I'm hesitant to delete content, but I believe this article would be best served by eliminating unnecessary information. I plan on making these changes soon, but I'm open to discussing them. Srob21 (talk) 21:58, 13 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for Improvement[edit]

Here are some of my suggestions for improving the article moving forward. Most of these suggestions I feel require more discussion from interested users in order for a consensus to be reached.

  • First, cut down the amount of information included on this page. I did not feel I could act as a subject matter expert for the article and differentiate the important versus non-important information. I noticed that not even the official St John's College website has as much information on the school as this Wikipedia article.
  • Second, this page needs more citations. I've inserted "citation needed" labels to show which paragraphs need to be verified.
  • Third, once the paragraphs are verified, the content needs to be checked for plagiarism. I fixed the plagiarism that I found, but I feel there needs to a more in depth investigation into the content of this article to check for plagiarism.
