Stephanie Says is a song by The Velvet Underground. It was released over a decade after the band broke up and is one of the most popular of songs newly released on VU.

[edit]"Stephanie Says" is especially popular? News to me. How is this measured? It wasn't released as a single, was it?
I'm surprised to read this, because in my POV, it's an embarassment to the VU catalogue, and the only justification for its existence is that it's a rough draft of "Caroline Says II". But that's POV and I wouldn't add it. I'm just wondering how anybody knows it's "popular". --63.25.27.249 17:52, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- Although I like the song, that statement is odd--there is no way to really measure it, there's no source, etc. That bit should be removed. Freshacconci 17:57, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I've compared the lyrics to "Stephanie Says" and "Distortions" by clinic, and I can't find a single line that matches. Compare:
Distortions:
I'd like to know completely
What others so discreetly
Talk about when they leave me
Not that I notice when they're gone
It's eerie and so scary
I don't know who to marry
Your sister came to bait me
But I love it when you blink your eyes
I've showed me once to often.
You'd never know how often
I've pictured you in coffins
My baby in a coffin
But I love it when you blink your eyes
Oh I, I want to know my body
I want this out not in me
I want no other leakage
I want to know no secrets showed
I leave, oh I leave, now I leave care
Free of distortions, free of distortions, free of distortions.
and Stephanie Says:
Stephanie says that she wants to know
Why she's given half her life, to people she hates now
Stephanie says when answering the phone
What country shall I say is calling from across the world
But she's not afraid to die, the people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her 'cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind
Stephanie says that she wants to know
Why it is though she's the door She can't be the room
Stephanie says but doesn't hang up the phone
What sea shell she is calling from across the world
But she's not afraid to die, the people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her 'cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind
They're asking is it good or bad
It's such an icy feeling it's so cold in Alaska,
it's so cold in Alaska, it's so cold in Alaska
Why is it that the encyclopedia says that "Distortions" borrows lines from "Stephanie Says" when there are no similarities whatsoever? This should be fixed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.42.20.158 (talk) 08:07, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
The statement that "Distortions" borrows from "Stephanie Says" is apparently removed now, but whoever claimed this obviously thought of (or quoted someone thinking of) "Candy says" from the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album, which IS lyrically similar.
