Hans Keller wrote about this piece's twelve-tone elements in an article in "Tempo" No 94 (1970 - the year of its publication) and also what he saw as its links with Schoenberg's (First) Chamber Symphony. In 1975, the footnotes to the reprint of this essay in "Hans Keller: Essays on Music" (Cambridge (1994) p 249)indicate he tried to discuss this aspect of the work face to face with Shostakovich himself, through a Soviet interpreter, who pronounced "It is true that there are very strong parallels between my Twelfth String Quartet and Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony". But after that they got no further than another statement interpreted as "Any means of expression are permissible to an artist".
