Delano connection?[edit]

Surprisingly, the article itself does not with a single word cover the fact that President Roosevelt's maternal grandfather shipped opium using Surprise, or that Sara Roosevelt herself voyaged on the ship. CapnZapp (talk) 17:46, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Section deletion[edit]

I have deleted the section: Influence on British clipper ship building. This is because it appears to be based on contemporary national jingoism that was fed by the PR of American clipper owners who were looking for business. The separate and parallel development of British and American clippers is well summed up by Howard I. Chapelle in the foreword to David MacGregor's book Fast Sailing Ships. This says, in part "...The claims that English designs were influenced by American principles are completely exploded."

I think the authority of the 2 great technical maritime historians working on the subject of clipper ships, one American and the other British, is sufficient to deal with remarks made in passing (WP:CONTEXTMATTERS) from a book written in 1896, without the benefit of any detailed historical research. In short, the deleted text is simply untrue.ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 20:32, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
