Tellurite ion geometry
[edit]Most solid state tellurites contain polymeric anions with 6 coordinate Te. Te differs from Se in this respect. Is there any evidence for the discrete TeO32- ion ? Axiosaurus (talk) 17:24, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
- I think you are on to something here. However when I looked at the Masse et al MRS paper on Na2TeO3 and Ag2TeO3. My French is poor but the figure and the bond distance indicate 3-coord Te. Three Te-O distances at 1.87 and three at 2.9 (barely bonding). In Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2002, 41, p3426, a Te2O6 4- anion is observed, but it is pretty distorted.--Smokefoot (talk) 13:03, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
- thanks. 2.9A looks long - I agree. The shorter bonds are similar to those in α-TeO2 which are 1.90- 2.08. I have found other examples which seem less ambiguous- Etude cristallographique du tellurite de sodium à cinq molécules d'eau, Na2TeIVO3.5H2O Acta Cryst. (1979). B35, 1337-1340, [ doi:10.1107/S0567740879006403 ], the pentahydrate of Na2TeO3 seems to have discrete ions which have bond lengths 1.85-1.862 A, and I guess as Wells agrees that these are pyramidal ions perhaps I can sleep easier tonight. Theres also this example, Verfeinerung der Kristallstruktur von synthetischem Teineit, CuTeO3•2H2O, Tschermaks mineralogische und petrographische Mitteilungen, 1977, Volume 24, Issue 4, pp 287-298 where I only have access to the abstract which also suggests isolated pyramidal ions. Theres a zoo of poly-tellurite ions - and some interesting new stuff - see Structures and Properties of Functional Metal Selenites and Tellurites, Jiang-Gao Mao et al, Inorg. Chem., 2008, 47 (19), pp 8498–8510, doi: 10.1021/ic8005629. When I have got more information together and understand it - I will try and add this into the article. I had done a little tidy up of the sodium tellurite article- and I will now add the three longer bonds. Axiosaurus (talk) 13:54, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
