This brief article is merely a recollection of seeing the Knickerbockers LIVE at the Carosel theatre in West Covina, California. I think that the theatre had been torn down for something else. Anyway, they were there playing with The Young Rascals and they come on stage and did an excellent live show, especially considering their equipment which almost any bar band's stuff would blow away nowadays. I especially remember the guitar parts with that unique sound. I recall him playing a Mosrite guitar which may account for that distinctive distortion. Also, I remember the crisp vocal harmonies and the Beatle sound they projected. All in all, a memorable performance. Obviously, this was in the 60's and I really look back on that period of time with great feeling. If I could go back in a time machine, I would go back to that period. (Of course I would be a bit older and wiser and have the knowledge of today, and, still look cool). Just wanted to share the experience and vibe of that moment.
Alright, this may be way off, but I watched a clip of "Lies," (from YouTube) and at the part where the lead singer (Buddy Randell) goes to play the saxophone, you don't hear a thing. According to a comment on this page, he was a shy person who didn't want to look like he had nothing to hold, so they gave him a sax... however this article suggests that he played. Does anyone know more about this?
My older brother went to high school with Bob and John Chichchino{Beau and John Charles}They would hang at our house after school. Bob took an interest in me and would coach me on sax. In a few years, I too would have a record out on the radio! Any way, Buddy Randell was a child prodogy on sax. He appeared on the Ed Sullavan show as a chid. Later to go on and join The Royal Teens[It's him saying" Who's that crazy Chick" and playing all the horn parts on that record. Bob Gaudio, one of the original "Four Seasons" was also in the band. There was alot of talent out of bergenfield in those years!
