(D)?[edit]
In the statement "originally orchestrated by Lincoln's Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton(D) and some Radical Republican allies" it is not clear why the (D) is there. If this is meant to indicate Stanton as a Democrat it seems a bit odd as by this time he had long broken with the Democrats. His own article lists him as being a Republic since 1862.
