Origins of Torben
[edit]I find it intresting that my name Torben, has been redirected to the name Torbjorn, and defined as meaning the same thing. From what I've been told, by my parents, Tor does mean Thor, but ben means something else, like warden, or guarden. Thoughts or information on this? Torben Hansen (talk) 11:53, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
I am a bit quirous about the source for this information, my name is Torbjörn and neither my parents nor myself have heard about this before. --Valross (talk) 05:31, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
According to http://www.gullsmokken.com/felles/navneguiden/guttenavn?s=m&n=Torben (Norwegian "Tor+bjørn, sterk bjørnejeger") Torben is derived from Torbjørn and means "Strong Bearhunter" --79.160.57.68 (talk) 19:43, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I know! Long time since i made this comment, but i have recently found something interesting. According to the Eyrbyggja saga. More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyrbyggja_saga or http://www.northvegr.org/sagas%20annd%20epics/icelandic%20family%20sagas/eyrbyggja%20saga/005.html, There is mention of "Thorbein of Thorbeinstead". I think it is much more likely that Torben is a modern version of the name Thorbein, not alternate of Thorbjorn. Look here: http://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/BEIN. Bein is Old Norse for bone or leg. beini, can mean help, benefit, Hence my previous understating of my name. Nebrot (talk) 15:39, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Meaning of Torbjörn / Thorbjørn
[edit]According to http://www.norskenavn.no/navn.php?id=166 the meaning of Torbjørn is Thunderbear.
I've also seen explainations that, since Thor was a god symbolizing strenght, Torbjørn means Strong Bear. I haven't found any online resources to this though. --79.160.57.68 (talk) 19:40, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
