1933 winner
[edit]Although the news report from 1935 states it was a 6th successive win for Sid Brews, the Southern Africa Golf HoF suggests Jock Brews was the winner in 1933: [1]. Probably needs confirmation. 51.6.161.113 (talk) 11:22, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- See: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/42509549/the_daily_newsjournal/ which has 1924, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935. However this must be wrong since he won in 1936. See also: https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=6gUuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=8JgFAAAAIBAJ&pg=4377%2C3238380 which says he had won it 6 times by 1935. https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=3qFAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=jaUMAAAAIBAJ&pg=4066%2C2087525 adds to the confusion since it mentions 5 in a row (after his 1934 win). When I added the Transvaal Open to Charles McIlvenny I wrote "Transvaal Open, times 24 Jan 1929" and this is confirmed by https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1929-01-22/1929-01-28?basicsearch=transvaal%20golf Nigej (talk) 12:40, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- Perhaps the "1924, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935" above means "1924/25, 1929/30, ... 1935/36" Nigej (talk) 12:59, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- See https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/127922842 and https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1922-01-01/1922-12-31?basicsearch=brews%20%22transvaal%20open%22 which seem to confirm Jock's 1921 win was in 1922. Nigej (talk) 13:12, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- Looks like Fred Jangle won it later in 1922 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/184801054 . https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=lJNAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=NKUMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5583%2C7269693 (26 Apr 1923) says "F. H. Jangle, the Open Champion of South Africa, and also the Transvaal Open Champion" but this https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1923-05-23/1923-05-23?basicsearch=transvaal%20jangle implies that Jock Brews had won it by 23 May 1923. Just wondering whether Jock's 1933 win was in 1923. Nigej (talk) 15:39, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

- Yes, good work. I've added the book ref to the top of the list. Seems it also wasn't held in 1941, so I've removed that as well. 51.6.161.113 (talk) 04:49, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
