Cover songs
[edit]Rolling Stone nicked Dave for doing mostly covers as this entry does, but I think it's a trivial factoid. Why I it more relevant in Dave's case than in the cases of Sinatra and Billie Holiday, who feasted for decades on covers. Unless the artist is a noted songwriter doing an album of covers, I don't see why it has any relevance. (An example of that is Harry Nilsson's album of Randy Newman songs.) - I'm seeing this as a "contractual obligation" album since it's his last for Swan Song; which would explain it being a compilation of mostly older recordings. I'd be interested to know which were recorded when, and where. (Not sure where the relevant studio logs would be found; maybe there are some details in interviews.) The 1968 recording that closes the LP, and the Stray Cats-backed track (Dave had recently produced their earlier UK sessions, themselves later compiled for the bulk of their US debut) are certainly interesting.
- As for Dave being cited as more of an interpreter than a songwriter, nothing wrong with that. See also: Linda Ronstadt.
