I've replaced this sentence in the WWII section, which seems to be a typo:

"Her second amphibious assault delivered in company with TG 58.2 was against the fastest type of its class also used as a helicopter and harrier transport the Marshalls (29 January–2 February 1944)."

with this sentence:

"Her second amphibious assault delivered in company with TG 58.2 was against the Marshalls (29 January–2 February 1944)."

which is from a previous revision.

The main picture displayed is after her 1955 refit. Adding WW2 picture may be more appropriate.

Infobox

Is it just me, or does the infobox on this article seem excessively long? It appears to be because of its extensive modifications and many honors and awards... I'm not sure, but should this be condensed, possibly removing one set of modification info? Just wondering. --Havocrazy 05:47, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I checked the other Essex class ship articles and none of them used the additional templates for the two conversions. In order to make the articles consistent I deleted the templates but put wikilinks to the two articles that discuss the conversions in detail in the category heading of the table. Also, at the risk of offending sailors and marines who served on the Essex, I updated the Awards and Honors sections to only the major Unit citations that had corresponding articles and removed the information that applied to eligibility for individual awards. There are other sources for that information and it seems appropriate to just include the unit awards for this article. Awotter (talk) 19:20, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Service History

The flow and dates on the service history needs some work. It not very clear on a lot thing. I don't think it should start with a summary at the beginning of WWII, for example. The dates are not clear enough there is not year so how is a person coming here for information to know exactly when it happened? I will be working on this situation this week. USS Essex was an aircraft carrier and the lead ship of the Essex class built for the United States Navy during World War II. Commissioned in December 1942, Essex participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning the Presidential Unit Citation and thirteen battle stars. Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine aircraft carrier (CVS). In her second career, she served mainly in the Atlantic, playing a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. She also participated in the Korean War, earning four battle stars and the Navy Unit Commendation. She was decommissioned for the last time in 1969 and sold for scrap in 1975.Photograph: United States Navy
