Ellet rams
[edit]What does this quote mean? "In the ensuing Battle of Memphis, Little Rebel attacked the ram Monarch, one of two vessels in the Union force under Colonel Charles Ellet, Jr., USA." What does "one of two vessels" mean in this sentence? Ellet was not commanding two vessels, and the Union fleet in the battle consisted of more than two vessels. Can we clarify or remove? - Your confusion is quite understandable. The command structure on the river at the time was strange, to say the least (see the article on the Battle of Memphis). The gunboats, though commanded by Navy officers, were a part of the Army. Also a part of the Army, but reporting to no one short of the Secretary of War, were the Ellet rams. Four of the rams were in the immediate vicinity of the battle, but only two got into the fight. The contribution of the rams to the battle is a subject of much contention, and it is not explored more deeply here because this article is about Little Rebel and not the Ellet rams.
- I have reworded part of the section, hoping that it will be a little clearer. (I do not believe that deleting reference to Monarch is an option.) PKKloeppel (talk) 03:25, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Ah -- the idea that only two of the Ellet rams got involved in the battle is new to me. I see that the current thinking on the battle is that it was more confusing and less documented than I had previously believed. Thank you. Sailboatd2 (talk) 22:34, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Poor picture
[edit]I am sorry that I had to include that crumby picture; it is the best that I could find. If someone has a better view, by all means replace it. PKKloeppel (talk) 17:04, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
