Valsukra is mentioned by Alberuni as being the first to put down the Vedas in writing. He was a famous Brahmin of Kashmir, who carried out the forbidden exercise of committing the Vedas in writing. He felt that there was great deterioration in the character of men and feared that the Vedas may be lost. He therefore took this extreme step. It was forbidden to write down the Vedas as this may result in errors in recitation as modulations may be lost or corrupted. Errors in copying may also distort it. Therefore learned Brahmins would have recoiled from writing it.
