06-1941-01 page 22 talks about US 17 being rerouted via SR 168. --NE2 10:52, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's something about 34th Street in Newport News in 03-1937-01 6. --NE2 16:51, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

General history[edit]

  • 1933: towards Buckroe Beach via Hampton and Newport News towards Williamsburg, replaced SR 529, SR 532, and SR 533
  • 1936: extended to Buckroe Beach
  • 1938: extension to SR 53 (now SR 30) towards Barhamsville complete
  • unknown: extended to SR 33
  • 1942: SR 168Y at Toano added
  • by 1944: new alignment (now SR 351) added between Hampton and Newport News
  • 1945: bypass of Williamsburg added between SR 162 and SR 5/31
  • by 1946: SR 168 east of downtown Hampton became SR 351, old alignment became SR 143; SR 168 extended over ferry to Sewell's Point, replaced part of SR 165 and most of SR 351 to Little Creek; the rest of SR 351 became SR 165
  • 1957: SR 168 moved onto HRBT and approaches from Warwick southeast to downtown Norfolk; US 60 moved onto HRBT; SR 143 extended over old US 60 east of downtown Hampton and old SR 168 northwest of downtown Newport News; SR 168 replaced SR 170 south of downtown Norfolk; SR 170 north of downtown Norfolk became US 460; old SR 168 in Norfolk became SR 170
  • late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s: SR 168 mowed to new freeway to near Barhamsville; SR 143 extended over part of old SR 168 (most of the rest was upgraded on the spot; the rest became SR 168Y - details on this are unclear)
  • ca. 1980: SR 168 truncated to Ocean View; the short independent piece became an extension of SR 249

I disagree with the proposed merge. Tidewater Drive is a major arterial with a history independent of SR 168. --NE2 05:43, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Then expand the Tidewater Drive article. As it stands right now, it is an article with no assertion of notability (aside from being part of SR 168) and no context. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:50, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Would've performed the merge, but this article is a mess. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 19:19, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

The Chesapeake Expressway is completely part of VA 168 and can easily be covered in this article. Dough4872 03:29, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support. the Chesapeake Expressway Article is short, oddly written stub whose infobox looks too similar to VA 168. --PCB 04:03, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Chesapeake Expressway is entirely a subset of VA 168.  V 16:54, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
