Wii connecting to DS

How would they connect? Over wifi? To each other or through the internet? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.120.93.246 (talk) 13:57, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

download or online service

Is this really the online service, or just the feature where it downloads stuff while on standby? I thought the Wi-Fi Connection was the online service for DS and Wii? Tphi 19:48, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Downloading involves being "online," so it's a safe bet. 88.106.78.28 14:37, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
To clarify, I meant is it the whole service, or just a part of the Wi-Fi Connection? Tphi 15:11, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
No, WiiConnect24 is separate from Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. So it is indeed "just the feature where it downloads stuff while on standby". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.254.168 (talkcontribs) 13:51, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

The article suggests unplugging the unit to disable this feature. This is not necessary as it can be disabled in the Wii settings. SimDan 11:36 CT Nov 20

Oh man, this really freaks me out. Someone could put a virus in the system and download it to all systems. I doubt that will happen though. Bttfpromo 00:06, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

If this article hadn't of mentioned patches I'd be lost on the purpose of it. It will be cool to get game updates while the console is off, I hate turning my 360 on after a month of not playing and having to spend 30 minutes downloading new patches to games. Theunknown42 04:13, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

The "patches" bit has only been suggested. Nintendo has not yet officially confirmed what content will be entailed.

It sounds like WiiConnect24 will be a feature of the Nintendo WiFi Connection, which itself will represent the entire online service for the Wii and Nintendo DS. At least, that's my impression. Cosmos 20:35, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Seconded. Tphi 01:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
That's your guess, you mean. Nintendo has not said anything about the service named 'Nintendo WiFi Connection' being used with Wii. Wikipedia is not a forum for presenting speculation as fact. Please feel free to add the section again if you can provide a citation. ~ Aero Leviathan 02:30, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

It's not a guess, it is what Nintendo seems to be doing. They have never stated that the NWFC was limited to the DS, and that the Wii would have an entirely new service. They only say that the WiiConnect24 is a service that allows data to be transfered to and from the Wii when it is on standby.
Of course, Nintendo is being vague about the Wii's online features right now, so it comes down to each person's interpretations. Right now, however, I don't anyone should assume that the WiiConnect24 represents the entire online service for the Wii. Cosmos 03:30, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
It doesn't. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.254.168 (talkcontribs) 13:51, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

From IGN: "The EAD leader confirmed once and for all that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on Wii would be an extension of the DS service and would not feature a standard interface like Xbox Live." (bold mine)

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is still the online service for the Wii and the DS, and WiiConnect24 is a feature unique to the Wii that uses the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. It does not appear that the Opera browser or online multiplayer (save for multiplayer features such as the Animal Crossing example) is considered a part of WiiConnect24. wired connections

Nintendo seems to have indicated that a USB 2.0-to-Ethernet adaptor will allow Wii to have wired network access. My question is, can wired connections leverage WiiConnect24? For that matter, wouldn't access to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection through a wired connection be a contradiction of the "Wi-Fi" part of the name? Dancter 20:25, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Seems too much of a technicality to me. It should definitely work with wired connection. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mythi (talkcontribs) 01:42, 27 May 2006 (UTC).
Semantics aside, I don't think it's such a sure thing. For WiiConnect24 to work, a network connection must remain open during sleep mode. Given that Wii has Wi-Fi built-in, it is almost certain that the radio remains functional at stand-by. On the other hand, for the wired connection to work with WiiConnect24, the USB interface would need to remain active during sleep mode, which is not a given. It is quite possible that the LAN adaptor may be considered a specialty item, such as the Broadband Adapter for the GameCube, which would mean it would have limited support. The fact that Nintendo includes "Wi-Fi" in the title of its online gaming service implies that wired connections may not be a high priority. This is a legitimate concern. Dancter 15:04, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
I have wired connection and WiiConnect24 makes use of it, it's just a matter of defining it in the Internet Setup Screen as you do a Wi-Fi connection. In addition, when the Wii is in standby mode, the USB interface continues to receive power (look for descriptions of 3rd party Wii USB fans). However, being able to say with certainty that Wii's Wi-Fi radio is turned off if there are no Wi-Fi connections defined in the Internet Setup Screen is a another matter. 195.77.63.25 13:21, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

That is almost definitely NOT the logo for WiiConnect24 - it's simply the slide from E3. It has been changed. Mythi 01:40, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Your point being? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 124.185.10.158 (talkcontribs) 12:11, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

he is just saying. someone could change it. he probably doesn't know how or something and wants someone to. (the preceding unsigned comment was made by dillbillz) (talk)

I've read from a couple of sources that energy saving legislation is set to colide with the Wii's connect24 service. If anyone more dedicated than me wants to look this up, it seems a pretty significant thing to add. MultiJoe 09:44, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Zelda:twilight princess having updating features

[1]

According to this interview with George Harrison the Wii version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will have updating with WiiConnect24.

--Kad 01:49, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

This site says different: http://www.landofthelegend.net/Hyrule/?grab=news_20061105 - IeditWikipedia 06:26, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

landofthelegend.net is not a reputable site, and is just trying to debunk the interview for the sake of it. The reasons this article states for no WC24 updates is that Nintendo has stated that there will be no multi-player component to Twilight princess, which was also stated in the interview with gamepro. For now I say it becomes part of the article until the statement is withdrawn by Nintendo. --Brieeyeball 14:57, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Confirmed Titles

Since the Legend of Zelda was confirmed to use WiiConnect24 for downloadable content should we make a different section for confirmed titles rather than possible ones?

The interview is in the following link. [2]

--Kad 02:04, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

I've added a section for confirmed titles and included Zelda. I'm not up for it right now, but I think that each title in the confirmed section should have a brief description of what features have been confirmed.--Brieeyeball 15:49, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Downloading your own software to the console

I think you could connect it to proxy through your own computer to only download content you want to download, and maybe even create your own content. Do you think this is possible? --zzo38(<font color=#7799FF face=Wingdings>[[User_talk:Zzo38|*]]</font>)[[User:Zzo38/sand|?]] 15:59, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

added in the new ssbb in the confirmed title section

since on the ssbb atricle, it say so. Zabrak 21:33, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

But that site actually says it'll be on wi-fi, not Wiiconnect24. Isn't there a difference? IeditWikipedia 03:49, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

i added the official logo from wii.nintendo.com

...thats sorta it... thealimighty 16:54, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Call of Duty 3

Does anyone have a source for piece of info stating that Call of Duty will be receiving an update to allow online multiplayer?

Yes, I think that it is fake. It needs citation. WiiVolve 07:06, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I think the statement works well enough without an example, so I'll remove the unsourced CoD3 bit. --Optichan 21:03, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Where will the content go???

Nintendo has already stated that the Wii does not have a hard drive, only a mediocre 512 MB of flash memory. Has it been confirmed if an external hard drive could be used? If not, I guess we should be saving up for a pretty good SD card quickly. Obviously game updates are going to take up a lot of room (50MB per large update, perhaps like a new dungeon or new feature). Kalidascorp 03:33, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

New tracks, levels, etc. aren't nearly as big as you might think. A lot can be packed into a small amount of space. For example, entire N64 games are no more than 32mb. For new bonus content most components (code, textures, etc.) are probably already part of the actual game. Zomic_13 05:09, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: 32mb
Mario Kart 64 12mb
Super Mario 64 8mb

Firmware repaired yet?

Has the Firmware been updated yet since the corrupt firmware was uploaded? Does it still destroy the system? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eric55673 (talkcontribs) 18:37, 22 December 2006 (UTC).

Yah, I'm pretty sure that since Nintendo loses money for each unit they have to replace that they got that fixed pretty quickly... (The answer is no, you can update and your system won't be broken... if you havn't already figured that out)

Leif902 02:33, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Corrupt firmware was never uploaded. The problem wasn't with the firmware, but with a very small number of systems. The problem with those system was that they were unable to connect and download the update - not that bad firmware was uploaded. If bad firmware had been uploaded, all systems would have been affected. Zomic_13 04:53, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

About Wii overheating

As a Wii owner, I found that during standby mode, my Wii got really hot. From numerous forum, it seems everyone also encountered this problem. I put in a few URL; the overheating issue is real; whether it is related to Wiiconnect24 or Wii itself is another matter.207.81.212.129 10:30, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I removed the section about overheating for several reasons. For one, most of those sources are invalid under Wikipedia:Reliable_sources. Second, none of those sources even mention WiiConnect24 as a the cause and by your own admission you are not sure if it is even WiiConnect24. Please do not add it again unless there is definitive proof of WiiConnect24 causing this and it is stated on a reliable website. Zomic_13 01:01, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Something getting hot is not "overheating". Something getting so hot that it malfunctions or otherwise behaves differently is. Sockatume 01:06, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Which is exactly the problem (pixelation). I will edit and move the section to Wii. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.81.212.129 (talk) 04:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC).
That's not heating related. It's been reported generally (from what I've seen maybe a couple of Wiis per 1000) regardless of the ventilation on the Wii and whether Standby Connection is used. Sockatume 04:25, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Madden and Weather

This is false, isn't it? Just because CNET accepts user submissions and doesn't check them ... Tim 17:51, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Power LED

Someone added "green" under the WiConnect24 LED colors stating "System on, WiiConnect 24 on/off. (depending on your selection)". Not only does the line above the colors state the description is LED colors when the system is off, but since there is no difference in colors when the system is on, it is redunant. I removed it. Draknfyre 02:43, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Purple Glow

In my class there is a woman who helps with special needs children (in this case a boy was hit by a car and is now in a wheelchair). I often talk to her about playing the Wii because she has one. She told me that her Wii glowed purple. What's with that? Frankyboy5 03:55, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

She's colourblind? Tphi 12:33, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

No! Frankyboy5 15:25, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

She probably only glanced at it glowing and thought it was purple. It does not glow purple. Zomic_13 18:19, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

No, she knows that it glows blue. She plays it all the time and after her kids (in high school) played the Wii the light started to glow purple. I'm going to contact Nintendo about this right now. Frankyboy5 21:40, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Okay, you let us know what they say.. Tphi 05:47, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

They just said it should glow blue unless it was modified. I highly doubt that she modified it. Frankyboy5 06:43, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Mario Kart Wii

Who keeps deleting Mario Kart Wii from this article. During the E3 press conference, they confirmed online play, including multiplayer online battle mode. This is enough to be in this article. The source is on the Wikipedia Mario Kart Wii article.

Mario Kart Wii has confirmed online play, which uses the [Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection] (WFC) Service. This is NOT the same as WiiConnect24, which is Nintendo's service for streaming content/patches to the Wii while it is on standby. I have just removed MK from the Confirmed Titles list, as it doesn't belong in this article.Nphp20 17:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Unresolved problems section

The entire unresolved problems subsection is regarding the recent rumors of console overheating caused by having WiiConnect24 on while the Wii is in standby mode. The entire section is unsourced/unverified and I don't recall seeing anything but rumors regarding this issue. I just went and edited the section for grammar and changed some of the wording around without really removing anything, but it is all still unverified information. Has anyone else seen anything from an official/reliable source regarding the overheating problems? Nphp20 03:20, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree. There is zero proof out there that WiiConnect24 is the cause of this. Plus, parts of the paragraph don't even make sense. It states that some games are affected more, such as Resident Evil 4 - yet if WiiConnect24 was involved no game should be affected more than any other since WiiConnect24 is only on when the system is off. I'm going to remove this section. Zomic_13 23:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
The problem is that the system disables the fan when in standby, however with the fan disabled too much heat can be generated when Standby Connect mode is on, eventually causing damage to the graphics chips and producing graphics artefacts in some games (possibly those which make heaviest use of the onboard graphics, like RE4). The difference in standby temperatures when Standby Connect mode is enabled and disabled can be felt by touching the rear of the console after a period of time (e.g. 1-2 hours) and, if a game DVD is in the console in standby mode, ejecting it touching that. It seems that consoles kept in enclosed spaces (e.g. television tables with shelves underneath for holding DVD players, etc...) and/or mounted horizontally instead of vertically are affected more. However Nintendo haven't confirmed officially if there's a problem with overheating, however they do replace the console. Given that it's a problem that's reported across a whole number of Wii forums and Nintendo are replacing the console, it should be kept so people can read about the problem and decide how they want to set up the console and if they want to enable Standby Connect mode. By the way, if we're editing the Problems section, the entry about firmware update errors should not really be there as WiiConnect24 is not used to update firmware. 195.77.63.25 07:39, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Didn't Nintendo already confirmed this issue and was looking into it? I recall reading an article about it on the actual Nintendo Wii's site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.188.204.2 (talk) 19:57, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Availability?

Connect24 vs. Standby Connection

What's the difference between Connect24 and the Standby Connection option in Connect24? Aren't they the same thing? What would be the point in having Connect24 on and Standby Connection off? Would that even do anything? 209.47.202.9 (talk) 14:54, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Generacy

WiiConnect24 on will send and receive messages while the console is on. Standby Connect mode will additionally send and receive messages while the console is in standby. The point is you may not want your console to be always on and bother you with messages when it's supposed to be 'off' or you may not want it to consume as much electricity. Also, there's the Standby Connect heat problem (see above), where almost everything in the console is on apart from the fan. 77.226.4.165 (talk) 21:36, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Confusion In Opening Paragraph

I was a bit confused by this sentence:

". . .for example, a friend might be able to visit another player's town and leave that player messages in Animal Crossing without him or her being present."

Is the phrase "visit another player's town" supposed to be referring to a town within the game itself, or within the real world? I was going to edit this, but, having never played Animal Crossing or used the Connect service, I think someone more familiar with the subject should handle it. --207.69.140.36 (talk) 05:06, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Another player's town, as in a town on another human player's Wii (that they have set up and live in). -Zomic13 (talk) 18:36, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
