The statement was not unsourced, because in the link in "references" that I had put you find this

"Un templete (MHN), construido por suscripción popular, preserva las ruinas restauradas de la pequeña fortaleza que, hacia fines del siglo XVIII, sirviera como residencia al teniente gobernador donJuan de San Martín y a su esposa, doña Gregoria Matorras; allí nació -el 25 de febrero de 1778- el general don José Francisco de San Martín. Dicho templete, que encierra uno de los monumentos históricos en que más se complace el sentimiento nacional, dispone de dos salas dedicadas a exhibir placas recordatorias. "
