Island[edit]

The idea for the community was based on the fictional story from Aldous Huxley's 1962 novel, Island.[1]

I'm temporarily removing this until I can clarify the chronology and accuracy. At least one other reliable source points to the community at Newton that was based on this idea, not Zihuatenejo. Viriditas (talk) 02:45, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Still need to explain what parts of the book (plot, story, etc.) influenced the development of the community... Viriditas (talk) 06:03, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Background[edit]

  • Research influenced by Gustav Fechner and William James
  • IFIF designed around the "Fifth Freedom" (the right to expand consciousness)
    • See Lee & Shlain 1992, pp. 96-98
  • Leary and Alpert first found the town in 1960. It wasn't until after the Marsh Chapel Experiment in 1962 that they finally decided to train there. (Conners 2010)
  • Previous communal living arrangement in Newton, Massachusetts. The noise attracted attention and a lawsuit.
    • Not clear if it was previous. Greenfield makes it seem like it happened after the first project session in 1962. Need further research as sources are hazy on the timeframe. My initial reading of it was that occurred before the trip to Mexico.
  • Left/fired from Harvard in April 1963

1962[edit]

  • Successful baseball game with town locals. Winning 8-0 (attributed to the alleged effects of LSD to slow down the ball, cf. Dock_Ellis#June 12, 1970, no-hitter) Leary "threw" the last inning and allowed the locals to even the score. Townspeople were so happy they threw a massive party for the Americans and Leary & Co. were invited back the next year. (Greenfield 2006:188-189)
  • Number of participants: 33 or 35?
