Tambovsky District (Russian: Тамбо́вский райо́н) is an administrative[1] and municipal[4] district (raion), one of the twenty-three in Tambov Oblast, Russia. It is located in the center of the oblast. The area of the district is 2,630 square kilometers (1,020 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the city of Tambov (which is not administratively a part of the district).[1] Population: 102,786 (2010 Census);[2] 102,018 (2002 Census);[6] 80,793 (1989 Soviet census).[7]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Tambovsky District is one of the twenty-three in the oblast.[1] The city of Tambov serves as its administrative center, despite being incorporated separately as a city of oblast significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1]

As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Tambovsky Municipal District.[4] The city of oblast significance of Tambov is incorporated separately from the district as Tambov Urban Okrug.[4]
