Tammy Bruce (born August 19, 1962) is an American radio host, New York Times best-selling author, and political commentator. Her nationally-syndicated talk show, The Tammy Bruce Show, airs on stations throughout the United States on Talk Radio Network.[1] She is also an on-air contributor to Fox News Channel.

After having described herself as a classical liberal for years, she now identifies as an Independent Conservative. The Tammy Bruce Show broadcasts three hours a day, six days a week, including Saturdays. Bruce's Web site describes her as "an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty "progressive feminist" who has voted for presidents as diverse as President Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

During the 1992 election season she worked on the first Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) senatorial campaigns.[2] In 2003 Bruce was appointed to serve on California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Transition Team after the successful recall election against then-Governor Gray Davis.[3] She is a supporter of John McCain and Sarah Palin in the 2008 Presidential race. [4] In the past, Bruce described herself as a "lifelong Democrat"[5], but has stated on both her radio program and blog that she is now registered as a "Decline-to-State" as of February, 2008. [6]

Career

Bruce's early feminist activism began in 1987 with abortion rights when she helped create, with a number of other professional women, one of Los Angeles' first ad-hoc independent pro-choice activist groups. They focused on confronting the anti-abortion group "Operation Rescue" and developed a strategy, which was eventually adopted nationally, which kept that group from their goal of successfully blocking entrances to abortion clinics. During the years 1987-1990 she was also a part of the the Los Angeles chapter of the AIDS activist group "AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power" also known as "ACT-UP."[7]

For seven years, Bruce served as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) (1990-1996), the longest continuous tenure in the chapter's 30-year history. She mobilized activists locally and nationally on a whole range of issues, including women's image in media, child care, health care, violence against women, economics, and domestic violence. She also served two years on the board of directors for NOW, which she heavily criticizes in her last book. During the early 1990s, she spearheaded the campaign to bring awareness to the sexualized violence in the book American Psycho by calling for a boycott of all other books published by Knopf for one year.

Bruce resigned from her position as president of Los Angeles NOW in June 1996 a few months after the Executive Board of NOW voted nearly unanimously to censure her for making what it claimed were "racially insensitive comments" during the O.J. Simpson murder trial. [8] Bruce claimed that the censure was due to her focus on domestic violence as opposed to defense attorney Johnnie Cochran's "racial issues" trial argument.[9] After months of infighting, Bruce resigned, and in the decade-plus that has transpired has written extensively on what she sees as the failings of NOW and the leftist movement in general, and the abandonment of authentic feminism by the American feminist establishment..[10]

In addition to her work as a writer, broadcaster and political analyst, Bruce was recently cast in "2081,"[11] an independent film based on "Harrison Bergeron," Kurt Vonnegut's classic tale about the importance of individualism and the threat of the fascist state. It is due for release in 2009.

Personal life

Bruce holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Southern California. Bruce's favorite charities include "The Trevor Project," which operates the only nationwide crisis and suicide prevention helpline for lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth, and the Humane Society of the United States. She is a member of AFTRA (the radio and television union), the National Rifle Association, owns several firearms and is an avid shooter, but only of paper targets.
