Template:Britannica/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Britannica. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template can be used to provide a link to the Encyclopædia Britannica's article on a given subject.
Usage
[edit]This template may only be used as an inline reference in an article on a related subject.
Parameters
[edit]Unnamed parameters:
{{Britannica | ID }}
{{Britannica | ID | TITLE }}
{{Britannica | ID | TITLE | AUTHOR }}
Named parameters:
{{Britannica | id=ID }}
{{Britannica | id=ID | title=TITLE }}
{{Britannica | id=ID | title=TITLE | author=AUTHOR }}
Combination:
{{Britannica | ID | author=AUTHOR }}
Finding the ID
[edit]ID is a numerical value given in the html source of the Britannica article in question. As of December 2021[update], it can be seen at "topicId":
around line 65 (or just use Ctrl
+F
, and type in "topicId"). Two ways of viewing the source code on a computer are as follows:
- Press
Ctrl
+U
on your computer's keyboard. - Right-click a blank part of the web page and select View page source from the pop-up menu that appears.
See for example How to view the HTML source code of a web page if you need help with this. The source of https://www.britannica.com/science/pancreas says "topicId": 440971
so it would use:
{{Britannica|440971}}
Resulting output
[edit]It produces a link with the URL https://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/440971/pancreas. It currently redirects to https://www.britannica.com/science/pancreas, but that URL may be less stable and cannot be produced by this template. When the template was originally made, Britannica.com included the ID in the normal URL.
TITLE provides an optional title for the link in place of the name of the Wikipedia article, in case the Britannica article has a different name for some reason (e.g. a Latin rather than a common name). For example, the Wikipedia article for the wild daffodil is titled "Narcissus pseudonarcissus", while Britannica uses "daffodil" and says "topicId": 149590
in the source. As such, the link would be formatted as follows:
{{Britannica|149590|daffodil}}
result:
- daffodil at the Encyclopædia Britannica
AUTHOR adds an optional author at the beginning of the output.
{{Britannica|440971|pancreas|Robert D. Utiger}}
result:
- Robert D. Utiger, pancreas at the Encyclopædia Britannica
This template places articles in Category:Articles with Encyclopædia Britannica links.
