Merge?[edit]

This seems useful, but why not merge the feature into {{citation needed}}? We could add a |content=parameter for the same functionality. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:31, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If it is possible, why not? It seems a similar feature, if not the quite the same, has just been merged from {{Reference necessary}} to {{Citation needed}}, but then reverted for further work. See Template talk:Citation needed#Bot work needed before merging. Here is an example using the sandbox version of {{Citation needed}}:
This example{{Citation needed span|shows the template}} used to request a citation for a specific part of a sentence.
The above wikitext will render as follows:
While this example shows the template[citation needed] used to request a citation for a specific part of a sentence.
I have hacked my CSS to display the wrapped text "shows the template" in yellow, but others may see just the faint dotted underlining.

I just noticed this template is being used here in Gwanghwamun and here in 2009 flu pandemic in Japan. The idea started from Template talk:Citation needed/Archive 7#A thought. -84user (talk) 04:44, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A similar change to {{citation needed}} (although using a dotted underline instead of pink background) is presently under discussion at Template talk:Citation needed#Revival of Merge Discussion. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:34, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm cansee no reason not ot merge this to Ref nec. straight away. Rich Farmbrough, 05:56, 26 October 2010 (UTC).[reply]
