Temple B'Nai Israel is a historic Reform Jewish congregation established in the 1880s, located in Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York.[2]
B'Nai Israel's current synagogue building is a three- to four-story tall, light brown brick structure with terra cotta decorative details.[2] Built in 1929, it measures 85 feet long, 42 feet wide, and 50 feet tall.[2] The front facade features a massive arched terra cotta portal encircling a large, round stained glass window.[2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.[1]
As of 2017[update], synagogue membership had fallen to 23 families; this was the first year a rabbi was not hired to lead Rosh Hashanah services.[3] B'Nai Israel still held regular services twice a month, but was reported to be in jeopardy of closing within the decade because of the ongoing exodus of young people away from the Olean area.[3]
