The Endless is a 2017 American science fiction horror film directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead and written by Benson. The film stars Benson, Moorhead, Callie Hernandez, Tate Ellington, Lew Temple and James Jordan. The film was released on April 6, 2018, by Well Go USA Entertainment. The Endless may be interpreted as a partial sequel to Benson and Moorhead's earlier film, Resolution, as it appears to share the same creative universe and some plot points.[3][4]

Plot

The film follows two brothers who receive a cryptic video message inspiring them to revisit the UFO death cult they escaped a decade earlier. The two brothers have different views on all the events that transpired and cannot find their place in the world beyond the cult. The older brother, realizing that a mass suicide attempt will soon happen based on the video message, fled the cult, taking his younger brother, who has happier memories of childhood and somewhat believes that the cult members will go on to fulfill their mission. Hoping to find the closure that they couldn't as young men, they’re forced to reconsider the cult's beliefs when confronted with inexplicable phenomena surrounding the camp, including an invisible entity that thwarts the unbelievers in day-to-day activities while aiding the believers. As the members prepare for the coming of a mysterious event known only as the Ascension, the brothers try to unravel the seemingly impossible truth before their lives become permanently entangled with the cult. Critical reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 95% based on 99 reviews, and an average rating of 7.7/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "The Endless benefits from its grounded approach to an increasingly bizarre story, elevated by believable performances by filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead."[8] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 80 out of 100, based on 18 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[5]

Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com gave the film 3 1/2 stars, stating, "If you have a good idea, a strong cast, a smart script, and directorial chops, you don't need a lot of money to make a compelling movie. The Endless is proof."[9]

Horror novelist and podcaster Brian Keene praised the film on social media, Tweeting "THE ENDLESS is a true horror masterpiece — a David Lynch meets Stuart Gordon meets Don Coscarelli fever dream of Lovecraftian cosmic horror that demands repeated viewings."[10]
