The Walking Dead: The Oath is a three-part web series based on the television series The Walking Dead. It aired in its entirety on October 1, 2013, on AMC's official website.

This series tells the origin of the "Don't Open, Dead Inside" paint on the cafeteria doors of the hospital Rick Grimes awakes in, post-apocalypse. It follows Paul and Karina as they escape their zombie-overrun camp in search of a medical station. The central theme of the series examines the will to persevere in the face of inevitable death.[1]

Plot

Paul and Karina are startled awake by the screams of their fellow camp members as walkers have overrun their camp during the night as they were sleeping. Karina and Paul escape the camp and come across a vehicle ravaged by walkers. Paul discloses that he suffered a deep laceration to his side abdomen and the two search for medical supplies in the abandoned vehicle only find an empty first aid kit. After Karina retrieves the keys to the vehicle from the bloody body of a nearby walker the two begin to search for a medical center in an attempt to find supplies for Paul who is quickly succumbing to blood loss. After finding the first two medical centers overrun by walkers, Karina finds a hospital. She finds a wheelchair in the debris barricading the entrance and wheels Paul inside to search for medical supplies. Karina finds a supply room and begins searching for supplies for Paul. While searching she hears a walker's hiss and quickly wheels Paul in the supply room. Before she can shut the door the walker overpowers her and forces her to the floor. She fires a shot at the walker but hits it in the chest. A second pull of the trigger indicates the gun is out of ammunition. Just prior to her imminent attack, Dr. Gale stabs the walker in the top of the head. Dr. Gale then attends to Paul's wound. As Paul is slowly recovering Dr. Gale shows her the hospital's destroyed state while indicating that she has placed deceased patients in the cafeteria. When Dr. Gale notices a drop in Paul's vitals, she assumes he will die and turn, and then proceeds to wheel him into the cafeteria. After she leaves, Paul regains consciousness, only to find himself strapped down on a gurney and trapped in a room full of walkers. Paul manages to escape the gurney and retrieves a gun from a dead police officer. He then runs at the door to the cafeteria and escapes, blocking it again. Meanwhile, Karina tells Dr. Gale how she doesn't want to be alone and that she wants to give up. Dr. Gale offers to lethally inject her and Karina agrees. Paul, having escaped, finds Karina only to see her depart. He blames Dr. Gale and shoots her. Then he pulls out walker Karina's teeth, puts her in a straitjacket and drives off, vowing to live on for however long he can.
