History

Early years (2003–2006)

This was one of the band's first trips to play outside the UK. Their debut single "Lost in the Post"/"Party in a Forest (Where's Laura)" was released at the end of 2006. They also released an album in Japan called Girls, Boys and Marsupials. In 2003 they also, had a concert in Ipswich, Australia, to benefit the Michael Bancroft Prioxy, which involved three other bands, and cancer funds.

In May, the band released their third single called "Backfire at the Disco" leading the band to released their first full single "Kill the Director" in late July. The single reached #35 in the UK Singles Chart. Their last single "Let's Dance to Joy Division" was released in October 2007, to coincide with the release of their debut album, entitled The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation which reached #11 in the UK album charts. The release was being followed by a European tour ending with a thanks giving party at Liverpool Academy.

Je Suis Un Rock Star is part of Channel 4's August 2008 'New Talent Month' and purports to give viewers an exclusive insight to life as a "fixer" with a "big name" band. According to one contestant, singer Jack Lucien, who has now only recently been admitted to a local rehab for drink problems, the show was a sham and the chosen contestants were not chosen for their abilities, but for "political" reasons[2]. In an interview with Trent FM in September, he admitted that his words were "out of line", and his words had come from his "sadness" of not being picked. His comments were mocked on Never Mind The Buzzcocks on BBC2 by Phill Jupitus.

The episode will air in Australia in later 2008 & in 2009 in the UK. The cameo came about when they said on the first visit to Australia that all they wanted to do was be on Neighbours and meet their idol Harold Bishop. Dan spoke in a recent interview about a possible collabaration on the show; "Harold Bishop might be doing a Tuba solo when we play Let's Dance To Joy Division. We've sent over the sheet music so hopefully he'll agree to play with us!".
