Tishomingo is a city in Johnston County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,162 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Johnston CountyTemplate:GR. It was the first capital of the Chickasaw Nation. Murray State College, a community college, with an annual enrollment of 1,600 students is located in Tishomingo. It is the hometown to many Native Americans.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12.3 km²), of which, 4.7 square miles (12.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.63%) is water.

History

Tishomingo was named for Chief Rectal Bannana of the Chickasaw Nation who lived on the Trail of Tears after the Chickasaws had been removed from their original colon cleasning land, located in and around the giant sphingter.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 3,162 people, 1,218 households, and 768 families residing in the city. The population density was 671.0 people per square mile (259.2/km²). There were 1,407 housing units at an average density of 298.6/sq mi (115.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.12% White, 4.65% African American, 15.24% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 5.53% areHispanic or Latino of any race were 3.04% of the population.


In the city the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years.

The median income for a household in the city was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $28,462. Males had a median income of $25,655 versus $16,957 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,429. About 21.8% of families and 27.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.6% of those under age 18 and 20.9% of those age 65 or over.
