History

The hospital was established in 1942 as the University Hospital Zagreb, when the main site (Rebro) was first built. Other individual hospital locations existed from earlier periods - the first Clinical Hospitals of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Medicine were founded in the 1920s.

In 2002 the than SDP Government of Ivica Račan agreed to invest 75 million euros into expanding the hospital, which made it possible to merge many of the clinics that were spread-out across the city into one central location while also adding a new surgical wing with an additional 36 operating theaters. By the end of 2008 most of the works were completed, although some work is still ongoing, the hospital once completed should have around 2500 beds. As of 2007, the hospital consists of 30 clinics and 7 specialized institutes.

Since July 2010, the Clinical Hospital "Jordanovac", a respiratory disease clinic located near Rebro, is part of the University Hospital Centre.
