Formation[edit]

In 1759, Glasgow town council was given powers to "cleanse, scour, straighten and improve" the River Clyde by Act of Parliament. The River Improvement Trust was formed at this time and it was succeeded by the formation of The Clyde Navigation Trust in 1858.[1]

Initially the Trust membership consisted only of town councilors, but was widened to include users of the river including manufacturers and ship owners, representatives of the Merchants' House and Trades Hall.[1]

Closing[edit]

In 1992 Clydeport plc has been responsible for port facilities on the Clyde, the firth of Clyde and the deep water harbours at Hunterston and Ardrossan.[1]

The Clyde Port Authority now overseen as part of The Peel Group.
