Orian Shukrun (born July 23, 1992) is an Israeli musician, singer-songwriter, composer, pianist, conductor and musical arranger. Conductor and musical director of the "Elmoghrabia" orchestra since 2017. In 2020 he was included in Forbes Israel magazine's list of promising young people '30Under30'.

Biography[edit]

Born and raised in Ma'alot-Tarshiha, he started playing the piano at the local conservatory and in his teens he went on concert tours in Europe and Africa on behalf of the Jewish Agency Wizo. At the age of 13 he repented together with his family.

He began his military service in the IDF as a secretary in the military rabbinate, until the military cantor Shai Abramson heard him and attracted him to serve under him as a pianist and musical arranger.

In 2014 he collaborated with Giora Feidman on his album "Klezmer Meets Jazz", and composed two of the songs. In 2016, clarinetist Carolyn Hartig played his work Klezmerline at the premiere in Columbus, Ohio. In 2017, he wrote for the Israel Festival the piece "Open to Me" inspired by melodies from the Hallel prayer, and the piece was performed by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.


In 2016, he founded the men's choir "Kol Hator" in Ma'alot, which engaged in hazzanut and piyyut.

In 2017, when he was 24 years old, he was appointed conductor and musical director of the Andalusian orchestra "Elmoghrabia". Under his baton, the orchestra collaborated with, among others, Berry Sakharof, Ishay Ribo, Hanan Ben Ari, Haim Lok, Shlomo Gronich, Galit Giat, Netta Elkayam, Shai Tzabari, Aviva Avidan, Mark Eliyahu, Daniel Zamir, Ziv Yehezkel, Rivka Zohar, Lior Elmaleich and many other artists.

Shukrun was guest as a pianist and conductor in the performances of the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra, the Chamber Opera Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Participated as a composer, arranger and conductor in the international klezmer festival in Jerusalem, the Arabesque festival, the Golden Age festival, the Israeli music festival, the Piyyut festival, the secret of many voices festival, the Ladino festival in Safed, the oud festival and the piano festival.

In 2018, he wrote the music for the show "The Built" by the KTMUN dance troupe, a work for the 100th anniversary of "Jerusalem the Built", the utopian book by Boris Schatz. In the same year, he composed and orchestrated the musical "Before You Come - Redemption Cabaret", to the words of Roei Ravitzky. The musical premiered at Beit Avi Chai in Jerusalem.

In 2020, he was included in Forbes Israel magazine's '30Under30' list of promising young people. In the same year, he wrote the music for the play "Block 30" staged by the Arab-Hebrew Theater in Jaffa, directed by Hana Vazana Grunwald, and released the first singles from his debut album as a singer-songwriter. Shukrun is a graduate of the 2020 Mandel Israel Fund Leadership Program in Jewish Culture.

In 2021, he composed the poem by the poet Roni Somek, "4 tips for a dancing girl", translated into Moroccan Arabic for the work "Block" by the choreographer and creator Orly Portal, which was commissioned and premiered at the Israel Festival. In the same year, he participated in the eighth season of the reality show the next star. In addition, his film "Between me and myself - not a winner" premiered at the Docaviv Galilee Festival 2021. He also composed the song of the singer Moshe Korsia "30 candles".

On October 20, 2022, Shukrun released his debut album - "Not a Winner". The album has 13 tracks containing songs and instrumental works. In the same year, he co-wrote the play "What are you connected with" together with Livnat Ben Hamu and Rachel Keshet, where he played the role of Or-Hai, a young creative musician from the periphery of Israel.

Graduated with a master's degree in composition and conducting from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in and the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Among his main teachers are Andre Hajdu, Michael Wolpe, Ioseb Bardanashvili, Menachem Weisenberg, Eitan Globerson and Yaron Rosenthal.
