Hugo Jaeggi – Photographer: The Dream is often real enough is a documentary by Matthias Leupold and Jérôme Depierre about the Swiss photographer Hugo Jaeggi.
The film focuses on Jaeggi′s photography art: the artist describes his pictures and talks about their creation. Martin Gasser, the curator of the artist′a Nachlass at the Swiss Photo Foundation, is interviewed. Jaeggi′s friend Peter Jaeggi, a Swiss journalist, is also interviewed. The title of the film refers to the ″visually powerful dreams″ that are characteristic of Jaeggi′s photographs: ″Insights into the emotional world with which he experiences family relationships and abysses in his life and continually relapses.″[1]
Depierre and Leupold's intention was to remember Jaeggi′s photographic legacy. The photographer was known for capturing the soul of the people he photographed with a sensitive documentary eye. The film shows how Jaeggi engages with people and situations in order to create photographs that tell the “unheard”.[2]
The film premiered on May 24, 2019 in Venice, Los Angeles and was shown on Swiss television and in program cinemas.
