History

NS 1065 is a General Electric Dash 9-44CW locomotive owned by Norfolk Southern Railway, one of the largest freight railroads in the United States. The GE C44-9W is a 4,400 hp (3,281 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania. Keeping in tradition with GE's locomotive series nicknames beginning with the "Dash 7" of the 1970s, the C44-9W was dubbed the Dash 9 upon its debut in 1993.

The locomotive was manufactured in 1999 and was originally painted in Norfolk Southern's standard livery of black, white, and red. However, in 2012, Norfolk Southern decided to honor the history of one of its predecessor railroads, the Savannah and Atlanta Railway, by repainting one of its locomotives in the classic green and yellow colors of the historic railroad.

As a result of the merger of several small railroads in Georgia and South Carolina, the Savannah and Atlanta Railway was formed in 1917. More than 500 miles of track were operated by the railroad, primarily serving agricultural and industrial customers. In 1963, the Savannah and Atlanta Railway was acquired by Southern Railway, which later merged with Norfolk and Western Railway to form Norfolk Southern in 1982.

Norfolk Southern repainted NS 1065 in the classic green and yellow colors of the Savannah and Atlanta Railway to commemorate its history. It was painted at Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, over a period of several weeks. The shop workers carefully applied the green and yellow paint scheme to the locomotive's exterior, along with the "SA" initials and the words "Savannah & Atlanta" on the sides of the hood.

NS 1065 was unveiled in June 2012 and quickly became a popular sight on Norfolk Southern's rail network. This locomotive has pulled a variety of freight trains, including intermodal and coal trains, as well as special events such as railfan excursions and employee appreciation events. Several railroad enthusiast publications have featured the locomotive, and it has become a favorite among Norfolk Southern employees as well as railfans. This page is not done.
