Affirmative action or reservation was given on the basis of social exclusion and discrimination caused by the caste inequalities that lead to economic and political exclusion as well. ^[1] The present day system should be seen in the context of the larger policy of protective discrimination, which includes the prohibition of untouchability and various other administrative and legal actions to remove disabilities.^[2]
