Fannie Simon (April 15, 1891 - October 20, 1980) was a New York-based publishing industry executive and philanthropist who enjoyed traveling the world.

Early Life

Born in New York City in the Spring of 1891, Fannie was the daughter of Julius and Bertha Gubner Simon. Julius emigrated from Germany in 1885 and was able to make a prosperous living for his family as a clothier. Thus, Fannie and her brother, Alexander, grew up in Westchester and on the Upper West Side, with live-in servants and horseback riding in Central Park. In 1930 Simon moved to the Murray Hill section of Manhattan where she would live for the next fifty years.^[1]

Education and Career

Simon attended Smith College, graduating in 1914. She began working two years later, first in advertising and then in the magazine industry, primarily as on-staff librarian. In 1932, Simon joined the Special Libraries Association, an organization she remained active in until her death.^[2]

Philanthropy

Simon was an avid supporter of the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the New York Philharmonic Society. She was also very active in the New York City Republican Club and the Smith College Alumnae Association. She was also a member of the Church of the Incarnation, and her neighborhood association, the Murray Hill Committee.^[3]

When she retired from McCall's Magazine in 1959, as librarian and associate editor, Simon volunteered much of her time to even more causes. At the time of her death, she was working as the coordinator of a program of conversational English for the English-Speaking Union.^[4]

Personal Interests

Perhaps Simon's greatest passion was world travel, a love which began when she a child and traveled to Europe with her family. Shortly before she died, Simon remarked to a friend that she estimated that she had traveled to over 150 countries. She often traveled alone as she did when she took what turned out to be her final trip to Iceland in September 1980. She published a few travel articles, but her full-length manuscript, "Following Fannie in a Changing World," remains unpublished.^[5]

Death

Simon died in a traffic accident in New York City on October 20, 1980; she was 89 years old.^[6]

Your introductory sentence does a wonderful job of summarizing the subject of the article. You've regularly included links to other Wikipedia pages, nicely working towards a more linked encyclopedia. Generally, we might see "Early life and education" rather than "Education and career" but that's not a huge sticking point for me. Quick tip: Wikipedia style dictates that in headings only the first word is capitalized.

Your citations are wonderful and happily plentiful — nice work! When you are using one source to cite multiple sentences, make sure you are using the "Re-use" function on the citation tool. It's the farthest right option when the little citation tool pops up. Then, all subsequent uses of one source will appear as [1], and the references section will link back to the source just once.
