John A. Hartwell authored over 100 papers in various medical fields during his career

American surgeon John A. Hartwell (1869-1940) authored one hundred and thirty-three papers on a variety of medical topics during his nearly fifty-year surgical career. Hartwell's first articles were published while he was still a student at Yale University's Sheffield Scientific School, when he co-authored two papers with his professor, Russell Henry Chittenden. The majority of his medical studies were written in the 1910s and 20s, while most of his later works involved administrative decisions and opinions.[1]

For much of his early life, Hartwell was not heavily involved in the medical field, but was instead a noted sportsman. During college, he was captain of Yale's crew team and an All-American End on the school's football team.[2][3] Temporary filler. Temporary filler. Temporary filler. Temporary filler.
