The Zimmermann Telegram was a World War I document sent on January 16, 1917 by German Foreign Minister Authur Zimmermann. The document was an attempt to draw Mexico and Japan into warfare if the United States joined the allies in Europe. Germany asked Mexico to join allies with them. However, both countries denied them. Zimmerman offered Heinrich von Eckhardt, German minister to Mexico, territory of the United States.
