We encourage collaborators to join and take inspiration from existing contributors like Tavares Strachan, who are generously donating their work for the Wikipedia community. Tavares is sharing the Encyclopedia of Invisibility, allowing it to be used as a reference or citation and inspiring others to write about invisible stories within Wikipedia guidelines. By collaborating, we can enrich Wikipedia with diverse and valuable content. Wikipedia is read by millions, so collaborating with Wikipedians ensures that notable and Wikipedia-worthy stories and articles can reach a vast audience, amplifying their impact and visibility.
I have spent my life being obsessed with telling lost stories. I believe that lost stories should be told in ways that match the ambitions of the people we speak for. I believe that we all have access to lost stories and it’s up to us to ensure that they are not lost forever. This is why I started the Encyclopedia of Invisibility project in 2014, with my first entry on the explorer, Matthew Alexander Henson.
The aim of this collaboration between The Encyclopedia of Invisibility and Wikipedia is to expand and create articles on people whose lives and contributions have been in some way excluded from the prevailing narratives of history. We hope that by providing a platform, Wikipedia editors and contributors will be inspired to act on their commitments to individuals and communities whose stories have been overlooked and forgotten. Through the collaborative efforts of researchers, editors, artists, and administrators, underrepresented individuals who come across the information provided here will learn that people like them had great influence in charting the circumstances of the present.
By granting public access to much of the knowledge collected in the Encyclopedia of Invisibility, we hope to expand participation in this project of open access to counter-narratives. By creating a page dedicated to promoting and preserving hidden histories, we can offer new perspectives to our collective memory and challenge the mechanisms of oppression that operate within the realm of encyclopedic and artistic representation.
