Named Most Valuable Player of the state championship game, Clifeteana McKiver went on to a successful college career, both at East Carolina University and Tulane University, as well as in the WNBA with the (now defunct) Charlotte Sting and Phoenix Mercury. McKiver has additional honors as East Duplin's all-time leader in scoring and blocked shots, and was a 3 year letter winner in track and field. She also holds the North Carolina High School class 2A record in discuss (133'1", 1997).

In 1997-98, McKiver was named the NCHSAA Female Player of the Year, an honor she shared with male counterpart Julius Peppers.

The Men's Basketball team reached the state championship game in East Duplin's first year of existence, but were defeated by North Edgecombe, 51-44, in the 1963 title game.
