Fresh Water Generator (flash evaporator) is a type of heat exchanger used to produce distill water from sea water. It is mostly used on ships and small crafts. Fresh Water Generator uses heat from steam, Cooling Jacket Water heated by the motor engine or any other heating medium such as electric heaters to boil Sea water at low pressure. Low pressure or vacuum is created by flowing either steam, or sea water through an eductor or Air Ejector. The low pressure allows the sea water to change its state at temperature less than the boiling point of sea water at atmospheric pressure. The brine left behind is discharged back to the sea. The steam is then passed through a demister to separate heavy vapors, which may carry salt. The steam is then condensed using a condenser and pumped to a storage tank by distill water pump. A salinometer checks the salinity of the discharged water and if the it is more than desired, then the salinometer activates a solenoid valve which discharges the water back to sea and raises alarm. To produce drinking water from the distilled water the latter is passed through the sterilizer, chlorinator and dechlorinator. Normally, it is used as a Jacket Water Cooler on ships and small crafts.

Plate type fresh water generators like plate type heat exchangers use platinum plates to transfer heat from the heating medium to the sea water required to be evaporated and extract heat from vapors to condense them to distill water in the condenser.
