San Eng (legally, Steven Siu San Eng), in Chinese: 伍少山 (Whu Shaoshan) (born 18 June 1969) is an American investor and entrepreneur of Chinese descent.[1] He has started a number of companies, including SMC Capital China and Xcelerate Ltd.

Education[edit]

Eng holds a BS in Economics from the Wharton School of Business[2][3] and an MBA from the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).[4][5]

Career[edit]

In 1998, Eng co-founded and led oCen Communications, first as CFO, then as CEO,[6][7] a VOIP startup based in Los Angeles and Hong Kong, raising $60 million in equity/debt, growing to 150+ people with over $20 million in revenues.[8] oCen was on track for a dual Hong Kong Stock Exchange and NASDAQ IPO before the dot com crash in 2001.[9][10][11][12][13]

In 2000, Eng started Xcelerate Ltd, an alternative asset investment firm, which he heads as of 2017. In 2008, Eng started and ran SMC Capital China as its founding managing partner, a private equity fund focused on growth capital.[14] SMC is the abbreviation of Simon Murray Company. Simon Murray is Ma Shimin [15] or Shiming in Chinese; SMC is therefore referred to as Shimin or Shiming Group in Chinese.

In 2013, SMC Capital China was ranked in the top-50 foreign private equity firms by Zero2IPO[16][17]. In 2014, EZCapital assigned it to the top 30.[18] Eng's notable investments include 21Vianet (NASDAQ: VNET), BE Education, VIMIU, Rider Horse and many others.[19][20][21][22][23][24][25]

Eng currently focuses on exploring investments in the emerging technology of Blockchain. He runs the investment site www.BlockInvest.Club as well as as BlockInvest Meetup in Taipei.

Eng also devotes much of his time to education, including teaching and lecturing at universities such as Shanghai Jiaotong University,[26] China Europe International Business School (CEIBS)[27] and the University of Nottingham at Ningbo.[28]
