Fiamma Straneo

Fiamma Straneo, also known as Fiammetta Straneo, is a Climate, Atmospheric Science & Physical Oceanographer and professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography[1]. Her primary research focuses on the interaction between the polar North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans with the atmosphere, polar and sub-polar oceans, dense water formation, overturning circulation, ice sheets interaction, specifically the Greenland ice sheet, and their roles on the global climate system[2].

Early life and education

Straneo attended the University of Milan, Italy, where she earned her Laurea cum Laude with honors (MS) in physics in 1992[2]. Straneo came to the United States in 1993 and pursued a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography at the University of Washington, Seattle[1]. She worked as a research assistant until graduating in 1999, writing her thesis on the dynamics of rotating convection, horizontal stratification, and wind [2][3].

Career and Research

In 1999, Straneo came to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) as a postdoctoral scholar at the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Ocean Research. She officially joined the institution as an assistant scientist in the department of Physical Oceanography in 2002 and in 2014, promoted to senior scientist[2]. At the start of her career, Straneo focuses on the impact of climate change on the ice sheets[1] . In 2008, she started fieldwork in Greenland. Since then, Straneo had led over 20 field expeditions with helicopters, icebreakers, vessels, autonomous and underwater vehicles, probing for changes in temperature, flows, salinity. She also used noble gases to trace melted freshwater's footprints at the margins of the ice sheets[2]. One of her most mentioned work during her time at WHOI discussed the presence of subtropical and tropical currents that come in contact at the ice margins[4][5]. Her research at the time provided data that support a popular but untested hypothesis, as well as introducing additional factors that explain the acceleration of the Greenland ice sheets melting that contribute greatly to sea level rise[4]. Since then her work expanded toward the impacts of ice melt and fresh water fluxes on the ocean circulations, fjords, glacial movements on the marine ecosystem of the Northern polar region [6][1]. Through the data she obtained, Straneo and her team collaborated with glaciologists, atmospheric scientists, pale-oceanographic scientists, and engineers, aiming to build models that accurately predict sea-level rising and address the dynamic ice loss[7]. Her primary funding come from the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)[8].

Straneo spent 18 years at WHOI and joined the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego on July 1, 2017 as a Physical Oceanographer and professor in Polar Climate and Ocean[1][2]. There, Straneo worked closely with POSTDOC researchers and graduate students. She aimed to expand the field of polar science research and increase public awareness of effect of climate change on the polar region and the global ocean system[1].
