History
The River Falls Journal was established in June 1857 in River Falls, Wisconsin [3]. It was a weekly paper and was created by brothers Lute and Horace Taylor [4]. By 1861, the Taylor brothers had moved the River Falls Journal to Prescott, Wisconsin and the River Falls Journal became the Prescott Journal. River Falls would not have another newspaper until Abner Morse began publishing the River Falls Journal again in 1872. After a stroke in 1877 paralyzed Morse, his son Calvin Morse, took over the management of the River Falls Journal at that time [5].
Structure of the River Falls Journal in the 19th Century
The paper had a seven-column layout that was common amongst papers published in the 19th century. The top of the front page of the publication featured the name of the paper along with the a picture of the Wisconsin state seal [6]. The River Falls Journal contained seven columns of information relating to poetry, business, local town news, and advertisements. There were no pictures or images in the 19th century version of the River Falls Journal but instead the paper was filled with text. Short written advertisements for food, clothing, attorney services or for issues that were coming to a vote were commonly advertised in the River Falls Journal. The paper reported on meetings held by
the St. Croix Valley Teachers’ Association, U.S. politics and published news from other Wisconsin publications such as the Milwaukee Free Democrat.
One example of the poetry often found in the River Falls Journal is this entry from January 9, 1981. ‘Kiss at Parting’
Kiss me with a loving kiss,
Maiden, ere I go;
For, in other land than this,
Rose and Lily I shall miss,
Mingled so!
With your heart in the embrace,
Kiss me for the time, until,
Home returned, again I’ll trace
Rose and Lily in thy face,
Mingled still!
