John Paul Cullinane

[edit]

John Paul Cullinane (born July 16, 1985) is an Irish-American Heavyweight boxer. Cullinane started boxing at the age of 8 years old at Howard Davis Jr.'s, "Glen Cove Police Boxing Club". Cullinane showed quick maturity and was the youngest Metro Heavyweight Champion at the age of 15 defeating Matthew Turner at famed Gleason's in Brooklyn, NY. [1]

Cullinane and Curtis Stevens were the most promising Junior Olympians to compete in The 2004 Summer Olympic Games and/or the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.[2] Stevens and Cullinane were roommates at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Despite their hype, it never came to fruition as Stevens turned pro in 2004 and Cullinane jettisoned for Ireland's National Boxing team as he is a citizen of Ireland. In July 2007, Cullinane was in a car accident that forced him to retire from Boxing.

Early Life

[edit]

Cullinane was born in Manhassett, NY on July 16, 1985. He excelled in multiple sports including Basketball, Baseball, Football, Archery, and Boxing. In addition to boxing, he was a three-sport athlete at Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY.

Amateur career

[edit]

Cullinane won the Metro Championship Belt in the Heavyweight Division at the age of 15 years old and was also a Silver Medalist in the Junior Olympics.[1] Cullinane has been coached by Andre Rozier (Brooklyn, NY), Al Gavin (Westbury, NY), Frank Pena (Glen Cove, NY), and Phil Sutcliffe (Crumlin, Ireland). Cullinane was ranked as the number 2 Heavyweight in the World and the projected Gold Medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China in the Heavyweight Division.
