Roblox Wrestling is a non-professional e-sport hosted on Roblox.[1]. There are several different classifications of Roblox Wrestling, the 3 largest classifications include Roleplay[2], - which involves using in-game avatars and chat features to roleplay a pro wrestling match - Animated[3], - which involves players using 3D animations to simulate a pro wrestling match - and Clean, which is the most competitive of the different types of Roblox Wrestling, and is characterized by fighting that resembles Roblox's Sword Fighting, with a rounded cylindrical mesh in place of a sword.

Roblox Wrestling is one of the oldest communities on the Roblox platform, being able to trace it's roots back to 2008, just 2 years after Roblox's public release[4], with the first Roblox models pertaining to Roblox Wrestling dating back to April of that year. Initially starting under one classification, Clean, it quickly expanded to encompass several different kinds of experiences. Within just 5 years, the community had grown to house over 10,000 unique players with so called "Federation Shows" occasionally maxing out Roblox's 50 player-per-server limit.

Rules and Gameplay[edit]

Clean[edit]

Clean Wrestling, being the most competitive of the different branches of Roblox Wrestling, is by far the most governed and regulated of them as well. A traditional Clean Wrestling match consists of 2 players facing against each other in a First To X kills style round. The kill requirement is most commonly 2, though it could be substituted as 3 or 5 depending on the importance of the match. The first person to reach the allotted kill requirement is declared the winner of the match.

There are two different kind of rules in Clean, one set of rules that causes the round to restart, and another that causes the rule breaker to be disqualified. There are only two things that lead to disqualification: hacking and auto clicking. Both require a disqualification as they are intentional and give the player an unfair advantage - both allowing the player to do exponentially more damage to their opponent. Events that may cause a round to restart include lag spikes and so called "trips" where a play is flipped onto their back by Roblox physics. Anything that is unintentional but gives an unfair advantage to one player will generally lead to the round being restarted.

Roleplay[edit]

Roleplay Wrestling is an uncompetitive e-sport, and is more focused on two or more individuals working together to entertain the people spectating the event. Roleplay Wrestling is characterized by the use of in-game avatars and chat messages to simulate a pro-wrestling match using only Roblox's physics engine. Given that this form of Roblox Wrestling is uncompetitive, there are no rules that govern what you can and can't do. It is largely accepted that Roleplay Wrestling is a more relaxed version of Clean Wrestling and is generally for those who prefer emulating wrestlers then competition.

Animated[edit]

Animated Wrestling, much like Roleplay, is an uncompetitive e-sport. It doesn't differ much from Roleplay in concept, though in execution Animated takes away the reliance on Roblox's physics and chat engine and replaces them with a series of animations. The uncompetitive nature of this type of Roblox Wrestling also leaves out the necessity for regulation on what you are allowed to do.

History[edit]

The creation of Roblox Wrestling is largely credited to the Roblox player yeoj1323[5][6], whom joined the platform in 2006. He is also credited with programming the first Clean tool, which ultimately led to the rapid expansion of Roblox wrestling. Several other individuals are credited with creating individual forms of Roblox Wrestler, for example, the user Liliardio is credited with the creation of Animated Wrestling[7], while the user austboon is credited with creating Roleplay wrestling. Other key figures include the users dyln_r2, who created the first Takedown tools, and kidzrock4 who created the Roblox Wrestling Alliance[8]

Roblox Wrestling is generally sorted into different sectors called federations. These range in size from Roblox Championship Wrestling - which is noted as being the largest federation ever made, all the way to federations that may only house 2 or 3 individuals. These federations will host their own unique shows, often once or twice a week, and commonly compete with each other to see who can garner a larger attendance. As federations enter and leave the community, so do the individuals that made them, which leads to consistent shifts in community leaders. These federations is also what leads to evolution in the community. Naturally, each federation wants to be better than the others, which leads to technological advancement, the creation of new forms of Roblox Wrestling, among other things.

Growth[edit]

Roblox Wrestling has historically grown through the creation of automated wrestling games. This timeline of most popular wrestling game on Roblox has traveled from DuhFlynning's Smackdown vs Raw 2011, to CasuallyCritical & dyln_r2's WWE 2K18[9], and is currently kidzrock4 and AskForHeaven's WWE 2K21[10]. Each of these games has been attributed as introducing hundred of thousands of people to the community of Roblox Wrestling.

On top of this, several popular pro-wrestling youtubers - including New Legacy Inc[11] - and popular Roblox youtubers have made videos about Roblox Wrestling[12][13][14], which has lead to enormous growth in the community as their fans are introduced to Roblox Wrestling.
