Marquetry (January 30, 1987 – February 1, 2013)[2][3] was an American Thoroughbred racehorse.

Background

[edit]

Marquetry was a chestnut stallion with a blaze and irregular leg markings, including a distinctive white patch on his left front knee. He was sired by Conquistador Cielo, the winner of the 1982 Belmont Stakes and that year's champion 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year.[4] Syndicated for $36.4 million in 1982 and retired to Claiborne Farm,[5] Conquistador Cielo sired 65 stakes winners before his death in 2002.[6] Conquistador Cielo's other notable progeny include Grade 1 winners Norquestor, Wagon Limit, and Conquistarose, as well as millionaire Forty Niner Days.[4][6]

Marquetry's dam was the Canadian-bred Vice Regent mare Regent's Walk, who raced primarily in allowance company and won two of her 22 races. She did race in a few stakes races, with her best results being seconds in the La Prevoyante Stakes and the Ontario Fashion Stakes, both at Woodbine Racetrack.[7] As a broodmare, Regent's Walk also produced French Group 3 winner Spain Lane.[8]
