Plum Pretty (foaled March 4, 2008) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse.

Background[edit]

Plum Pretty is a bay mare who was bred in Pennsylvania by Silent Indy Stables and DDS Stables.[1] She is part of the third foal crop of Medaglia d'Oro, a winner of three Grade 1 stakes races, including the 2002 Travers Stakes. Medaglia d'Oro retired to stud in 2005 at the age of six after winning eight of his 17 starts. In addition to siring Plum Pretty, he is also the sire of 2009 Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra, two-time champion Songbird, and 2017 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Talismanic, among other notable horses.[2]

Plum Pretty's dam Liszy, a daughter of 1992 American Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, ran in two races in early 2003 before being retired to become a broodmare. While a poor performer on the racetrack, she sold for $170,000 in January 2008 while carrying Plum Pretty, and had previously been sold in early 2006 while carrying a More Than Ready foal.[3]

Plum Pretty's owners tried to sell her twice as a yearling, but she did not meet her reserve both times. In March of her two-year-old year, she sold for $130,000 to John Fort.[1]

Racing career[edit]

Plum Pretty first raced on October 27, 2010 at Hollywood Park Racetrack, winning a maiden special weight race that would be her only start at two years old.[1]

At three, Plum Pretty finished third in both the Las Virgenes Stakes and the Santa Ynez Stakes, before winning the Sunland Park Oaks and Kentucky Oaks.

Retirement[edit]

In November 2012, Plum Pretty was sold for $4.2 million to Whisper Hill Farm as a broodmare prospect. Following the sale, Whisper Hill Farm owner Mandy Pope said that she would be sending the horse to Timber Town Stable near Lexington, Kentucky prior to being bred.[4] Her first foal, a colt by Distorted Humor, was born on February 6, 2014.[5] Later gelded and named Plum Amazing, he did not race until 2019, when he finished fourth in a maiden special weight race at Tampa Bay Downs.[6]
