Platypus Media is a small American publishing company that was founded in 2000 by science writer Dia L. Michels. It publishes non-fiction books mainly in areas of breastfeeding, attachment parenting, Women's health and science education.[1] Based in Washington, D.C., Platypus Media and its founder often visit science education fairs and La Leche League conferences across North America.[2]

Books

Platypus Media is best-known for its children’s book, If My Mom Were a Platypus: Mammal Babies and Their Mothers (2005), and released a Hebrew version of this book in the United States in 2007. The book follows the nurturing process of fourteen different baby mammals, finishing with the breastfeeding human baby. The book is recommended by the National Science Teachers Association.

Attachment Parenting DVDs

Platypus Media are also among the few companies in North America that distribute attachment parenting DVDs and VHSs to universities, hospitals, corporate clients and the public. The material is produced by British production company Mark-It Television and the titles discuss subjects such as breastfeeding, latching, co-sleeping, and weaning.

Science, Naturally!

In 2001, shortly after starting Platypus Media, president and founder Dia L. Michels founded Science, Naturally!, a publishing company that promotes science literacy through books that appeal to both parents and children.

Platypus Media have been reviewed by School Library Journal and Booklist and has featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the Los Angeles Zoo, the Boston Children's Museum, the Museum of Science. Platypus Media’s list of endorsements includes the American Association of Birth Centers, Lamaze International, La Leche League International, Attachment Parenting International, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Carnegie Academy for Science Education.
