The CK Birla Group is an Indian conglomerate with interests in three business sectors: technology and automotive, home and building, and healthcare and education. The group was founded in 1857 by Seth Shiv Narain Birla. As of 2014, it includes over 20,000 employees, 24 manufacturing facilities and operations across five continents generating US$1.6 billion in revenueCite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).. The home and building cluster comprises the Superbrand HIL[1], Orient Cement, Orient Electric and Orient Paper. The CK Birla Group also operates in the healthcare and education sector through the Calcutta Medical Research Institute, Kolkata, the BM Birla Heart Research Institute, Kolkata, the Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi, Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata and Rukmani Birla Modern High School, Jaipur[2].

The CK Birla Group has long-lasting relationships with global partners including Daimler, Oracle, Ford[3], SAP[4], multiple global universities[5], BRENCO[6], Caterpillar[7] and others. Its association with BRENCO for railway equipment stretches 30 years; and with Caterpillar goes back 27 years. The group's future strategy is based on developing talent and employing world-class technology[8].

The conglomerate is also involved in philanthropic initiatives covering scientific research, development and the preservation of India’s heritage[9].

Leadership[edit]

The group is presently led by CK Birla (born Chandra Kant Birla), an Indian industrialist and philanthropist. He is the son of Ganga Prasad Birla, and is married to Amita Birla, chairman of Birlasoft, co-chairman of National Engineering Industries (NEI) and head of Birla Corporate Services. Under his direction the CK Birla Group has involved itself in varied philanthropic activities.

Philanthropy[edit]

The group's philanthropic initiatives encompass science, technology, art and culture, heritage preservation and livelihood generation. The group has built numerous R&D facilities, science museums, planetariums, seminar halls, conference facilities and exhibition spaces, and India's only dinosaurium[10]. It builds, maintains and renovates temples, runs dharamshalas for pilgrims, and has supported excavation and restoration at important archaeological sites[11]. It has also helped build village infrastructure, worked on slum rehabilitation and undertaken welfare activities such as setting up old age homes[12].
